{what I'm doing in my home church}
For years, I’ve met with girls for Bible studies (age 8 to 13 and beyond). I usually meet with a couple girls at a time, and we go to fun places like Panera, froyo, parks, and my apartment. We start with basic Bible study principles and, over the years, work toward the ability to open Scripture and study any passage. We use observation, interpretation, and application plus individual techniques and principles within these categories. These meeting times lead to easy discipleship-oriented conversations where I get to live life alongside of these girls and their families.
On Wednesday nights for many years, I’ve been helping with the 3rd to 6th grade girls. This involves weekly discipleship groups where we study God’s Word and memorize it. I also teach sometimes in large group time. I try to connect with my girls outside of Awana, too. This year, a friend (Abby – future BMM appointee to a creative access nation) and I hosted a Valentine’s Day party. We welcomed our T&T girls into my apartment and had a great time of connection.
For eight years, I’ve counseled a group of 12 - 25 girls in 4th to 7th grade from my church for one week in June at a Baptist camp in Iowa. I love spending a week with these girls (and some great co-counselors!) and building into their lives. Our camp places special emphasis on having counselors from each church who can continue to encourage the girls year-round. I also host an annual get-together for the girls right before school starts, to help them reconnect and remember what they learned at camp. We always have snacks, a craft, water balloons, and card games.
Despite having just a one bedroom apartment, I love having people over. God has given me a great living space for hosting church small groups and individual get-togethers. I love preparing a meal and making my space cozy and inviting, for guests and church family.
A couple other things:
Each summer I help with VBS. I usually teach several lessons. One year, I directed a VBS class.
On Sunday mornings, I help with the 3rd and 4th grade kids. I am the assistant, and I also substitute teach.
